Jadeite is one of the toughest materials ever used in jewellery, and one of the easiest to spoil. The two facts are not in conflict — they just refer to different kinds of damage.
Jadeite has a reputation for being indestructible, and there is something to it. But the reputation causes a specific kind of problem: people who would never put a pearl in hot water will happily scrub a jade pendant, leave it on a sunny windowsill, and clean the silver it’s set in with a dip solution — and then wonder, two years later, why it looks flat.
Almost none of this is dramatic damage. It is accumulation. Sellers dealing in the material — the Yunnan-based BMjade among them — note that pieces sent back as “faded” or “cloudy” are usually neither; they have a surface problem that took eighteen months of ordinary habits to create.
Here is what is actually going on, and why the correct advice depends on one question most owners can’t answer about their own piece.
First: hardness and toughness are not the same thing
Hardness resists scratching. Toughness resists breaking. They are independent, and jadeite has a very lopsided combination of the two.
Jadeite’s crystals grow as interlocking grains, which means a crack cannot travel cleanly through it. That structure makes it exceptionally tough — far tougher than most gemstones, which is why it can be carved into thin rings and open work that would shatter in almost any other material.
Its hardness is around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. Ordinary household dust contains quartz, which sits at 7.
So jadeite is very hard to break and comparatively easy to scratch. Nearly every care mistake comes from protecting it against the wrong one.
The question that changes all the advice: A, B or C
This is the part that has no equivalent in other jewellery, and it matters more than everything else combined.
Commercial jadeite is classified by what has been done to it:
- Type A — untreated. Cut, polished, and conventionally given a light surface wax. The stone itself has not been chemically altered.
- Type B — acid-bleached to strip brown iron staining, then impregnated with polymer to restore the structure the acid destroyed.
- Type C — dyed.
Those letters describe processing history, not quality. They are widely misread as a grading scale, and sellers are not always in a hurry to correct the misunderstanding.
For care purposes, they are effectively three different materials.
A Type A piece is a stone, and behaves like one. A Type B piece is a stone held together by resin, and the resin is the fragile part: it yellows under UV, softens with heat, is attacked by solvents and by ultrasonic cleaning, and degrades over years whether or not the piece is worn. A Type C piece has dye sitting in surface fissures, and dye fades with sunlight and migrates with sweat.
Which means: if you don’t know your piece’s classification, the safe assumption is Type B, and the safe advice is the cautious version of everything below. If it came with a laboratory report carrying a serial number, look it up. If it didn’t, treat it gently.
Sunlight
Start here, because it’s the one nobody thinks of as a habit.
A jade pendant hung on a mirror, a bangle left on a windowsill, a bowl of pieces on a sunny shelf — for Type A material this is harmless. For Type B, prolonged UV accelerates the breakdown of the polymer, which is what produces the yellowed, slightly greasy look that older treated pieces develop. For Type C, it fades the dye.
Display is not storage. Keep pieces out of direct sun.
Hot water, and the wax nobody mentions
Type A jadeite is conventionally finished with a thin surface wax after polishing. It fills microscopic pits left by the polishing process and gives the stone its characteristic depth.
Hot water softens and gradually removes it. So does steam, so does an ultrasonic cleaner, and so does prolonged detergent contact. The stone underneath is unharmed, but the surface loses a degree of lustre, and the change is slow enough that most owners register it as “it doesn’t look how it used to” without connecting it to anything.
Lukewarm water. Mild soap if necessary. Nothing hot.
The dry cloth
This is the most damaging habit on the list and the one that feels most like care.
Household dust contains quartz at Mohs 7 — harder than jadeite. Wiping a dusty piece with a dry cloth drags abrasive particles across the surface under finger pressure. Done regularly, it produces a fine network of micro-scratches that reads as haze rather than as scratching, and no amount of subsequent polishing restores it.
Rinse before you wipe. Every time. The sequence is the entire point.
Ultrasonic cleaners and silver dips
Two devices that should not go near a jadeite piece, for two different reasons.
Ultrasonic cleaners work by collapsing microscopic bubbles against the surface of the object. On Type B jadeite they attack the polymer directly. On Type A they strip the wax and can worsen any existing fracture. Neither outcome is reversible.
Silver dip solutions are the less obvious hazard, and they catch people out constantly, because most jadeite jewellery is set in sterling silver or gold-plated sterling silver — and the metal tarnishes long before the stone does anything.
Dip solutions are acidic. They are formulated for metal and are actively hostile to treated stone, to surface wax, and to any adhesive in the setting. Dipping a jade-and-silver piece to brighten the metal is one of the more effective ways to ruin the stone.
If the metal needs attention, polish the metal specifically, by hand, avoiding the stone.
Sweat, sunscreen, perfume — and the cord
Jadeite itself is not porous in the way turquoise or pearl is, and it tolerates skin contact well. The vulnerable parts are everything around it.
The setting. Most jadeite is mounted in sterling silver, frequently gold-plated. Plating is measured in fractions of a micron and sweat strips it faster than almost anything in daily life, because it combines chemistry with friction. On a jade piece, the stone will outlast the metal by a wide margin — the setting is the weak link, not the gem.
The cord. A great deal of jadeite is strung on braided cord or elastic rather than chain, and cord is consumable. Sweat, sunscreen and body oil degrade it invisibly from the inside, and elastic in particular fails without warning. Treat restringing as routine maintenance on a schedule, not as a repair after something goes wrong. On a bead strand, knotting between beads means a break costs you one bead rather than all of them.
The usual rule applies and applies harder here: last on, first off. Jewellery goes on after sunscreen, perfume and hairspray, and comes off before the shower and the gym.
The impact question
Jadeite’s toughness is real, but it is not infinite, and there is one form it protects you against poorly.
A rigid bangle worn on a wrist that swings into a door frame, a granite worktop or a car door takes the full energy of the strike on a thin curved section. This is the single most common way a jadeite bangle is lost, and it usually happens during something completely ordinary — reaching into a cupboard, getting out of a car.
Carved one-piece rings have the same vulnerability in miniature: a thin closed band of stone with no metal to absorb anything.
Nothing about this makes jadeite fragile. It means the failure mode is impact, not wear — so the protection worth taking is removing rigid pieces for tasks involving hard surfaces, rather than worrying about scratches from ordinary handling.
Does wearing it “improve” the stone?
It’s worth addressing, because it’s the most repeated claim about jade and it changes how people treat their pieces.
What is observable: regular handling deposits skin oils on the surface, which fill microscopic irregularities and can make a piece look slightly deeper or glossier — the same optical effect as wetting a pebble. On some pieces this is genuinely attractive.
What is not established: that wearing alters the stone. Jadeite is a metamorphic rock formed under enormous pressure; nothing that happens on a wrist changes it. Any change you see is a surface film, and it washes off.
There is also a practical catch. On Type B material, accumulated oil sits on degrading polymer rather than on stone, and the appearance change over years is deterioration rather than improvement. The advice “just wear it, it’ll get better” is safe for untreated jadeite and actively misleading for treated jadeite — which is the same conclusion as everything else in this article.
The short version
Rinse before you wipe. Lukewarm water only. No ultrasonic, no silver dip. Keep it out of direct sunlight. Take rigid pieces off around hard surfaces. Replace cord on a schedule. And accept that the metal will need attention long before the stone does.
All of which depends on knowing what you own. The classification is not cosmetic information — it determines whether half the advice above applies to your piece, and it is the one thing a buyer cannot determine by looking.
